In his will dated Jan 26, 1750/1, Philip Tanner of East Nottingham, Chester County, PA, mentioned an indentured servant. An abstract of the will gives the servant's name as William McWheny, but in a copy of the original, which is difficult to read, it looks more like William M. Wherry.
Tanner's neighbor and friend, David Wherry, who had come from Northern Ireland as a young child with his family in 1718, was a witness to the will. One might "read between the lines" and infer that William Wherry (if that is indeed his name) was a relative of David's, and that David might have induced Tanner to bring William to America as a servant.
There were no known Wherrys in America as early as 1751 aside from David and his immediate family, and although there were Williams in his family later, there were none that early. Therefore, this appears to be a previously unknown Wherry.
Does anyone know anything about this William Wherry?
