Edward, I will contact you directly by e-mail about this subject, but for the benefit of all Whiffen researchers I will post a few facts I know about Uridge M. Whiffen. He appeared in the 1870 census in Rock Island, IL. Born in England, occupation artist. Uridge's age was 39 in 1870, thus born circa 1831. Wife's name Louisa. She was 40 in the 1870 census, thus born circa 1830, in PA. Daughter Olive was 6 yrs old in the 1870 census, born in IL. I am aware of Uridge through diary entries made by my ggg-grandfather, Robert N. Tate. Tate was an early partner of John Deere in Moline, IL, followed by a plow factory partnership with the wealthy Buford family in Rock Island, IL. My attention has been focused on Whiffen as an artist, as Tate also became an artist upon retirement. Whiffen and Tate were friends. In fact, Whiffen painted Tate's portrait, and if anyone in the world knows where that ended up, I'd be very interested in knowing.
