We have had mtDNA testing done for these Bell sisters. They do not have Cherokee mtDNA. They have mtDNA consistant with their mother's reported place of birth: Scotland. Their mother-in-law, Barbary B. was probably Cherokee. Her grave has reportedly been bulldozed over, but witnesses from that time reported that it was apparently a Cherokee grave, with some type of house built over it. I am a descendant of Plea Adam Whisenhunt, b. c. 1769 Lincoln Co., NC, and his wife, Barbary B. My line runs through their son, Adam Whisenhunt, and his wife Nancy Ann Bell. I am also the founder and group administrator for the Whisenhunt DNA Project.
