I am looking for any information on the following Whistler family.
Hannah Whistler was born around 1824 in Chester County, PA (Possibly in the city of Coatesville). She married a Stephen Spencer ( born in New York City in 1817 ) in 7 Dec 1852.
George Whistler was Hannah's brother and I assume he was born in Chester County as well around 1818.He is listed in the 1850 Philadelphia Federal Census in Philadelphia County, North Mulberry ward as a bricklayer. His wife was a Mary A. Benedict. They had 2 children: George Whistler, Junior in 1852 and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Whistler in 1857.
George Whistler Senior was wounded in the Civil War and died in a Philadelphia military hospital in 1864.His wife, Mary, followed him 13 days later to the grave (died of tuberculosis).
George Whistler, Jr. and Lizzie Whistler were adopted shortly thereafter by their Aunt, Hannah (Whistler) Spencer and Stephen Spencer. The are listed in the 1870 New Jersey Federal Census as having lived in Essex County, Clinton Township.Stephen was a hatter or worked in a hat factory.
Shortly after the census of 1870 was taken, they heeded the call to go west by Horace Greeley and were 4 of the 200 people to help start the Union Colony in Greeley, Colorado.
Anyone with information about this family, in particular information about Hannah, George, and Mary in Philadelphia and Chester Counties.
