I have read many books, postings, family trees, etc, that state that Jabez Whitaker died about 1626 to 1628 in Virginia. Also others have said that the Jabez Whitaker that appears in the Barbados between 1649 and 1651 was someother Jabez Whitaker or maybe his son. While it is possible that some of the mentions of Jabez in Barbados is his son, it is clear that the Jabez Whitaker mentioned in the will of William Whitaker in 1649 is Jabez Whitaker of the Holme. The support is as follows:
"Barbados Records-Wills and Administrations, Volume I" William Whitaker is a witness to the will of Daniel Wight and his age is given as 54. The will is dated 5 Sept 1648. ( page 384)
On page 381 the will of William Whitaker dated 25, Oct., 1649 mentions brother Jabez Whitaker as one of the overseers.
The actual copy of William's will refers to Jabez as " my loving Brother Jabez Whitaker". The actual copy of the will was obtained from The National Archives of the UK, which is online.
I have obtained the baptismal records of William and Jabez from the Cambridgeshire County Council and the Cambrideshire Archives. William and Jabez were baptised in Cambridge at St Clement church. The records state as follows:
Sep 1, 1594WhittakerWilliam son of Mr Wm Regius Professor of Theology
Dec 11 1595WhittekersJabeez son of William
William Whitaker's age is stated as 54 in the will of Daniel Wight dated Sept 5, 1648. He was baptised Sept 1, 1594. That makes him 54 in 1648. William in has will of 1649 refers to "my loving brother Jabez Whitaker.
Based on the above I believe it is clear that Jabez was stil alive in 1649 in Barbados and is also the Jabez Whitaker who is mentioned as a one of the richest planters in Barbados in the book " No Peace Beyond the Line"
