Searching for letters, journals, and other personal documents referencing the life and military service of John C. White, who joined Company D of the Forty-ninth New York Infantry at Buffalo in the summer of 1861. He started as a private and advanced to first lieutenant. On May 10, 1864, at Spotsylvania, Virginia, he was reported missing in action. His comrades supposed he fell into enemy hands. White was never heard from again.
