James, It is difficult sorting out the Whitebreds (that's how the name seems to have been spelt) of Essex. They were a mainly Catholic family who refused to conform to the Church of England and were persecuted (and fined) as 'recusants'. Quite a bit of research was done in the family in the 1860s and some of it privately published in "Essex Recusant" the journal of the Essex Recusant Society. IN Vol 7 No.1. April 1965 there is a pedigree of the family. I note you say William Whitebread was the father of Henry Whitbred (b.1591)who married Jane Woodward. However, the Essex Recusant Pedigree says Henry Whitbred's father was Henry Whitbred (b.1556). His mother was Ellen, daughter of William Keys of Essex. You ask about ancestors, so I will start from the top: 1. John Whitbred married Dorothy.... They had a son and and heir: 2. Thomas (of White Notley) who married Margaret Smythe of Cressing, Essex. They had 3 children: i. Clement (d.1542); ii. Thomas Grey (of Cressing Temple); Christopher (see next) 3. Christopher Whitbred of Fambridge (d.1543) married Maude French of Stebbing (d.1554). [A copy of his will (one page) is in Essex Record Office, Chelmsford]. They had: i. Ellen married John Burles, alias Sponer; ii. Thomas (see 4 below); iii. Thomasyn; iv. Joann married Thomas Eglisfield of East Ham. v. Anne married Thomas Overed. 4. Thomas Whitbred (d.1599. [ There is also a copy of his will at Chelmsford. He married twice: (1)Dennys Burles alias Sponer. They had: i. Thomas (b.1540); ii. Thomas (b.1543) married Elizabeth White; iii. Grace married John Collett; iv. Dennys (1547-1567); v. Mary (b.1549); vi. Clement. (2) Honesty Hunt. Married 1553. They had: i. John (b.1555) married Joanne Vaughan ii. Henry (see 5 below); iii. Mary (b.1557)married Richard Everard; iv. Agnes (b.1560) married Henry Wright; v. Ellen (1562-1595); vi. Christopher (1564- 1588); William (born 1570?). 5. Henry (b.1556) married Ellen daughter of William Keyes of Essex. They had: i. Thomas of Great Baddow (1585-1684) ii. Henry (see 6 below); iii. William (of Writtle and West Thorndon) married Bridget Greenwood of Brize Norton, Oxfordshire. He died 1661; (will in National Archives, Kew); iv. Robert (b.1596). 6. Henry Whitbred (b.1591)married Jane Woodward. They had: i. Henry (see 7 below); ii. Thomas (b. 1637); iii. Ellen (b.1640); iv. Bridget (b.1642); v. William; vi. Samuel; vii. Alice; viii. Mary. 7. Hebry Whitbred (1635-1684) married Katherine...(died 1676. They had: i. Elizabeth (b.1663); ii. Sarah (b.1667); iii. Henrietta Maria (b.1668); iv. Katherine (b.1669); v. Thomas (b.1672); vi. Frances (b.1676). That's as far as it goes. Essex Recusant lists 52 Whitbreds in the White Notley Register between 1540 and 1684. Unfortunately it gives years, but not exact dates. It says "The entries relating to the Whitbreds show the interersting fact that even while appearing consistently as popish recusants, the were still using the parish church regularly for baptisms, marriages and burials. Hope this may be of interest.
