mary ann - it seems our information comes from the same sources and is pretty close.because i have tended to construct dates of birth based on census data or marriage dates my dates and family order differ somewhat.here is what i have:
children of john whitehorn and mary unknown "jr/sr"
lucy, b c1780, possibly never married
william, b c1780, m zilpah rose 3/26/1803
patty, b c1784, m david newsom 1/19/1804
elizabeth, b c1785, m n. newsom 12/21/1807
john, b c1790, m mary felts 3/18/1811**
frances, b c1795, m thomas holliday 1815
nathaniel, b c1801, m zilpah m. bailey
2/3/1825 they had a dau, ann e. whitehorn
who m nathaniel newsom 8/2/1845
nancy, b c1804, m richard bailey 4/1/1824
unknown, b c1812 (still birth?)
as to the children of john whitehorn and mary felts (my ggg grandparents), this is the holy grail i have been pursuing for years.i have not conclusively found anyone descended from any of his siblings.based on the 1830 census for logan co., ky, they had eight children.based on research which is still "under construction", i have tried to fill in some gaps:
1) male, b. c1813 (prob sussex co., va)
2) male, b. c1815 (prob sussex co)
3) female, b. c1818 (prob sussex co.)
4) female, b. c1820 (prob sussex co.)
5) female, b. c1822 (prob sussex co)
6) female, b. c1825 (prob logan co., ky)
7) male, b c1827 (prob. logan co.)
8) male, b c1829 (prob logan co.)
john whitehorn's will and debts were handled by mary whitehorn (his widow), eliza whitehorn price (an older dau), and benjamin price (possibly eliza's husband) in 1842.no whitehorns appeared on the 1840 census that i can find, so i assume john died sometime around 1840.there is mention of unknown heirs, but no specific names.the elder john was poor and in debt.there is a family story told by john warren whitehorn that his family just left their farm in ky and he always wanted to go back to reclaim it.he may not have known it was sold for debts within a year or two of his father's death.i suspect the widow mary was already living out of the county or out of the state when she returned to take care of matters.her daughter eliza, however, may have married a local man - there were a number of price families in the county and had stayed behind.because i tend to think this eliza was probably their eldest daughter, the female born in 1818, she would have been 24 and probably married in 1842.
i believe child no. 5 was a typo and really referred to a male child, my gg gf john warren whitehorn who was born in 1822 and whose birthdate would have conformed to the 1830 census.
the 1900 california census shows an archy whitehorn in mendocino, ca. who was b. 3/1828 in ky.he could easily fit as one of the two younger brothers of john warren w.this archy said his parents were born in ky, but this is an easy error when he might have seen them as from ky though not actually born there.
the family story goes that there were five brothers - arch, sam, dave, will, and john.the 1830 census only counts four sons so i am not sure what to do here nor do i know that the story refers to this generation, but interestingly there is also a dave who may tie in.the 1850 census for montgomery co., illinois lists david g. whitehorn, b. in va c1814.his wife catherine was born in ky c1818.the 1860 census adjusts david's birthdate to c1816, but either way he could easily have been the eldest son of john and mary felts whitehorn.when john warren married he settled down in macoupin co., ill. which is adjacent to montgomery co. and other members of david's family lived in macoupin at one time or another.given how rare the name is, it seems a strong case that they were related.also, mary felts whitehorn lived with john warren whitehorn in macoupin co. at one point.it may have been from there that she returned to logan co. to take care of the property problems.
so there you have it!in pencil, dave is no. 1, will or sam is no. 2, eliza is no. 3, unknown female is no. 4, john warren whitehorn is no. 5, unknown female is no. 6, archie is no. 7 (maybe), and will or sam is no. 8. - something to that effect.
if you have anything on this generation, it would be a great help.by the way, ancedoctally, i told you i went to logan co. a couple years back.in the northeast end of the county, a point on the gaspar is still known to the locals as whitehorn ford, but they have long since forgotten why. - tony
