Golden Wedding of John and Josephine Whitish - Celebrated Monday by Mr. and Mrs. John Whitish, Sr.
"John Whitish (now Sr.) and Miss Josephine Witzig were married by the parish priest in Sempelburg, Prussia. The following March they left the old country and emigrated to America, coming directly to Grant County and settling on 80 acres of land near Annaton.A little later they bought a larger farm in the town of Fennimore, between Annaton and Preston, and lived on it for 47 years.By industry and frugality they secured a comfortable maintenance, and two years ago took up their residence in the village of Fennimore. On the farm they had lived an active, useful life for nearly half a century, and they thought they were entitled to spend the remainder of their days with less toll and labor.Thirteen children were born to them, all of whom, with the exception of two deceased Adam and Jule have attained manhood and womanhood. They are John of Hickory Grove; George of Fennimore; Edward of Wingville; Mrs. Kate Motzoff of Wingville; Alexander of Fennimore; Mrs. Mary Drass of Wingville; Joseph of Fennimore; Mrs. Anna Townsend and Mrs. Rose Townsend of Minnesota; Peter of Clifton; and Ellen, at home.Five brothers of Mr. Whitish, George, Jacob, James, Joseph and Michael, followed him to this country shortly after he left. They are all living around here, with the exception of the last named, who resided in Chicago, where he died.Monday was the 50th anniversary of the worthy couple and in honor of the occasion, nearly all the relatives gathered at their home in this city and celebrated the event with a bountiful dinner and reminiscences of the olden times.Mr. Whitish is 77 years of age and his wife 73.Both are still hale and hearty, and in good health. They do not look as old as many ten years their junior. They have our best wishes for many more years of added usefulness."(Source:Fennimore Times:26 Nov 1902, p8c1.Marr. 24 Nov 1852)
