I am trying to connect to the Whitman family as they come forward from Weymouth, MA. The story seems very confusing and contradictory. Thanks to P.D. Crowe and the Whitmania web site for the good info that I have so far. What I have is that John Whitman was born in 1602 in Holt, Norfolk, England. His parents were Abijah Whitman and Alice Eaton. John had a brother named Zachariah and they came over on the "Truelove" 19 SEP 1635. This must be the same Zachariah Whitman mentioned in the records of New Haven, CT. Now, Walt Whitman said that Zachariah had a son named Joseph who was accepted as a "Freeman" of New Haven Colony and that Walt was descended from him. The problem is that I see from Brian Whitman that Zach had no children. Maybe Joseph was actually a son of John. Further, I have seen various "trees" that show John had a son, John, born in Berkeley, MA in 1631 and that his wife was Ruth Reade. The problem there is that I also have seen Ruth Reade as the wife of the first John Whitman, making her the second one's mother. Or was his mother Sarah Prudence Alcock? Would someone who really knows this early New England line please help out? My mother's grandmother was Katherine Agnes Whitman. Her Father was Martin Ira Whitman (b. 7 APR 1843 in South bend Indiana) who married Lydia Alice Barnum Clark. Martin's father was William Green Whitman of Vermont who married Laura Jane Finch. That's as far back as I can go so far. I feel sure the two ends hook up in the middle somewhere. Any help will be appreciated, Mike F.
