I have no connection to this family, but thought this article might be of interest to someone.It appeared inthe newspaper, Metropolis Planet, in Metropolis, Massac Co., IL, on 12/31/08 in a section entitled, "Yesterday's News", 85 Years Ago, Republican Herald, December 28, 1923:
"C.C.Whittman, 91, died at his home here on Christmas Day.He was born in Bavaria, Germany and came to America at the age of 35.He settled in Metropolis and until his health began to fail, was active in manufacture and repair of farm vehicles, plows and machinery.In 1867 he married Magdelena Bunchman of New Albany, Ind.Of their four children, two survive - Mrs. Millie Arnsman and Henry J. Whittman.Mrs. Whittman died in September of 1909.Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon at the home of his son, with burial in the German cemetery.Prior to his coming to America, Mr. Whittman traveled extensively over Germany, Austria, Jugo-Slavia, Romania, Russia, France, Greece and Upper Italy.(Note:Whittman's business was on Fifth Street, immediately west of the City Hall.He was responsible for shoeing the fire department's horses and repairing the department's horse drawn equipment.)
