Let me explain my very very long road to getting to this point.I am a historian for Franklin County, Arkansas. In examining the probate records for Charles Whitson I discovered a few odd things. His probate was in 1844/5 in Franklin Co, AR
1) His wife (deceased) was named Feliciana. 2) Children : Eliza Ann, Nathaniel Taylor, Isaac Jefferson John, Margaret Elizabeth 3) His wife died before he did. 4) William Scott, comes to court to claim guardianship of the children, on behalf of his wife Margaret, late Margaret Miller, grandmother of the children.William Scott of Phillips County. 5) James Gilbreath, admin of Charles Whitson, asks the court for money to fight a lawsuit by William Scott of Phillips Co over guardianship of the children. 6) William Scott, makes a claim for expense of taking children to Phillips Co., AR [Phillips is quite a ways from Franklin Co] 7) In the probate proceedings, Margaret Scott, the grandmother, claims that one of the slaves was actually a gift to HER from her brother William Collins.
OK so it tooks me at least 20 hours to figure out HOW Margaret (Collins) Miller Scott could be grandchildren to these children. Finally here is what I found.
1) Charles Whitson to Feliciana Keller 17 Jul 1828 Ouachita Co, Louisiana 2) 1830 Census Charles Whitson in Ouachita Co, 20-30 years old, his wife 15-20 years old 3) On the page just prior to Charles in the 1830 we find Margaret Miller a widow, 30-40,living next door to William Keller a younger man 20-30 4) From the 1850 Phillips Co, AR census we know that Margaret Scott, wife of William Scott was 62 and born in SC.William was 65 and born in NC. 5) William Scott to Margaret Miller 18 Jan 1832 Ouachita Co, Louisiana
OK so now we had Margaret Miller to Scott in LA, living there near to Charles Whitson and wife and later contesting guardianship in AR after they all moved there.
But was Margaret the mother of Feliciana? or of Charles?
The answer was completely accidental
6) MRS KELTER to John Miller 16 Sep 1818 East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana
As you can see I could have never found this, but I was just idly looking at all Miller marriages in Feliciana. So now we have Feliciana's mother, but we still don't know her father, but we know that they were living in Feliciana as early as 1818.
Feliciana herself was supposed to be born in LA per her daughters 1880 census extract, but that was 70 years after the fact and perhaps they were mistaken.
At any rate, I need to find more conjunctions of the names Collins, Keller, Miller, Scott and Whitson.
Thanks for any help or direction on where to look next. Will Johnson Franklin Co, AR Historian
