Will, I was able to visit the courthouse in Helena, Phillips Co., AR today. Below is the petition filed by William Scott for the custody of Charles Whitson's children.
pg. 428 Book 3 Thursday Morning February 20th court meets pursuant to adjournment and presiding the honorable John S. Horner, Judge.
3-75The petition of William Scott as the next friend of Nathaniel Whitson, Jefferson Whitson, and Margaret Whitson minors under the age of fourteen years praying for the appointment of the said William Scott as guardian of said minors and the said William Scott agreeing to accept the said Guardianship of said minors, and having incited a Bond to each of said minors in the sum of One thousand Dollars with William F. Moore as his security which said Bonds are approved by the Court, and thereupon it is ordered by the Court that said William Scott be and he is hereby appointed Guardian of Nathaniel Whitson, Jefferson Whitson, and Margaret Whitson minors as aforesaid.
I've been looking at the census for William F. Moore. He was a very well to do merchant from Virginia. William Scott, Alfed Coffee, and William F. Moore all lived in the Richland Township in Phillips Co., AR. This township was located in the LaGrange, AR area.
I also found a letter from the County of Phillips to the State of Arkansas about William Scott's death. It states that he died on or about the 25th day of October A.D. 1852. John H. Hicks was appointed Administrator. There were no mentions of survivors in his family. From other records, I know that he had a daughter named Caroline Scott. She married a Delos S. Everett in Phillips Co., AR. This letter was filed on the 16th day of November A.D. 1852, by the court clerk, Edward H. Cowley.
Also, I located Alfred Coffee in Sebastian Co., AR in the 1860 census, which was taken on the 17th day of August. Apparently Eliza Ann Whitson Coffee died sometime between 1856 and 1860. Alfred has these children listed: Albert age 14, Orville age 12, Delora age 10, Jesse age 8, Alan age 6, and Frances age 4. Alfred remarried in Franklin County on September 3, 1860 to a Sarah Hart age 33. Alfred is listed as age 50 at this time. It also states that he is from Sebastian Co.
I visited the Tri-Co. Genealogical Society on Saturday. I checked the cemetery records for Phillips Co., AR. I couldn't locate a listing for the Scott's. However, at that time I did not know where Richland Township was. When I get another chance to go back to the Library, I'll look at the cemeteries listed for LaGrange.
Let me know what you think about this. If I find anything else, I'll post it so everyone will have access to it.
