Seek information on WHITTREDGE ancestry and descendants, and would like to connect with descendants of my ancestor William Whittredd/Whittredge of Ipswich, Mass. Early descendants were in Essex County, Mass. (e.g., Beverly); one branch of the family moved to Rochester, Mass.
William Whitteredd, age 36, a carpenter, came to America in 1635 on the “Elizabeth” with his wife Elizabeth, 30, and son Thomas, 10 (Hotten, Original Lists of Persons of Quality, pg. 56)
He was in Ipswich, Mass. by 1637 (Hoyt, The Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury, vol. I, pg. 357) and d. in December 1668, probably in Ipswich
He was married three times, his third wife being Susannah, widow of Anthony Colby of Salisbury, Mass.
William had 6 children by first wife Elizabeth. One child, Samuel, was killed in 1675 in the battle of Bloody Brook in the King Philip’s War (Savage, vol. IV, pg. 533) … a daughter, Abigail, married John Baxter … I am most interested in another son, Thomas (from I am descended)
This Thomas, b. England about 1625, came on the “Elizabeth” (as noted above) in 1635 with his father and mother … he m. Florence (Norman) Hart, widow of John Hart and daughter of Richard Norman (Davis, “The Ancestry of Sarah Stone,” pg. 35).
An incredible story of Florence (Norman) (Hart) Whittredge’s death by drowning in 1672 is contained in a jury of inquest decided, on 2: 6: 1672, that she was "axcessary to hir own death by stifling or Drowning hir selfe in the wattr." (Records and Files, etc., V: 124; cited in Ancestry of Sarah Stone).
A full and strange account of her death is contained in the Memoir of the Rev. William Adams, of Dedham in Coll Mass Hist Soc, 4th Series, Vol. I, pp. 17-18.
Thomas & Florence (Norman) (Hart) ) Whittredge has five children … a daughter Hannah married John Trask … a son, Thomas Whittredge, Jr. m. 1st, Charity Livermore, and 2nd, Sarah (Herrick) Morgan, widow of Samuel Morgan, daughter of Zachariah & Mary (Dodge) Herrick of Beverly, Mass. and granddaughter of Henry & Edith (Laskin) Herrick.
Charity Livermore appears to have been a daughter of William (d. Beverly before. Mar 31, 1691, when his will was proved) & Elizabeth (_____) Livermore, but her ancestry and information on her father is unclear.
From his 2nd marriage --- to Sarah (Herrick) Morgan -- Thomas Whittredge, Jr. has two sons, Richard Whittredge, b. Beverly Dec 22, 1704 and Lt. Livermore Whittredge, b. Beverly in 1705 … there is some dispute over who Livermore’s parents were … some researchers have asserted that he must have been a child of Thomas Whittredge, Jr.’s first marriage, to Charity Livermore.
The above-mentioned son, Lt. Livermore Whittredge (b. 1705) married Mary Gadge, daughter of Moses & Sarah (Dodge) Gadge (or Gage) and granddaughter of John & Sarah (Proctor) Dodge … Lt. Livermore d. July 28, 1773 in Beverly.
