Hi Darren, The Whorf family was from Provincetown, Barnstable Co., MA.The earliest documented Whorf is John Whorf, married to Sarah Ann Wibert at Dorchester MA 2 Aug 1757.Their children were recorded at Truro: Sarah b 1758; John b 1760; George b 1763; Isaac b 1765; Joseph b 1768; Samuel b 1772; So far, all of the research indicates that this was a separate family from the Wharf/Wharff/Wharffe family of Gloucester, Essex Co., MA. Some researchers have tried to make the connection of John being the son of John Wharff and Hannah Cleigh, but the known records do not support this theory. Some early research suggests that the P-town Whorfs are descendants of the Waffes who were at Charlestown in the 1600's but, again, there is no evidence of this. The origins of both Sarah Ann and John are unknown. I estimate that this John Whorf was born about 1720-1730.There is no evidence of his age, other than his wife's date of birth and his marriage date.Sarah's gravestone indicates she was born in 1727.There is no gravestone for John, and Sarah was listed as the head of household in the 1790 census. Like you, I am researching all possible variations of the name Whorf, looking for John's family line.I will keep your James in mind as I research and hope you will do the same with John.
