Hi Steve - I know that my follow-up is about 5 years too late, but just in case your still watching out I thought I'd throw my two-pennorth in.
Are you sure that Maude Wieland's father's first name was Percival (however spelt) and not Frederick?Perhaps some of the following might click?
A John Frederick Wieland born Walworth Surrey c. 1830 married Jane Clothilde Thatcher in 1853 in Lambeth (J-S 1d 385).They had two boys: Frederick Drummond Wieland born 1855 in Partick, Nr. Glasgow, Scotland and Thomas Thatcher Wieland, born c. 1857 in Port Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.(The elder Wielands were involved in a minor court case over some land they owned in Port Glasgow at about the time of Thomas's birth.)
The 1861 census has the two lads and Jane Clothilde living in Seaforth Litherland, near Liverpool, Lancashire.John Frederick was down in London (he was Company Secretary and Major in the 12th Lancashire Volunteers).
Jane Clothilde died in Seaforth, Litherland, Liverpool, Lancashire in 1861 (West Derby A-J 8b 307), shortly after the census was made. The two lads were sent to a boarding school in Yorkshire (Sedbergh - pronounced Sedburuh) where the 1871 census found them.Meanwhile their father had remarried, into my family, to a Clara Emma Rishworth (a first cousin many times removed) and he and his new family were living down in London, in Marylebone.
Frederick Drummond Wieland then went down to Oxford, where he matriculated at age 19 from St Mary's Hall on the 17 November, 1874.Two and a half years later, on 27 June, 1878, he arrived in NYC on the American Schooner, Clara L. Dyer, aged 23 years and 2 months. His occupation was Merchant; he had had a Cabin on board (he was the only passenger). He intended to stay in the US.He is recorded on the electoral rolls for Santa Cruz, CA, for 1908.
Does any of this strike you as possibly related to your P.D. Wieland (how many Something Drummond Wielands can there be?).
All the best Anne.
