I need help,my Great Grandfather on my mother's side was William N. Wilbanks or Willbanks depending on which census you are looking at. I would appreciate it very much if someone could tell me who his parents were. The following is all that I've been able to find out so far.
The 1850 census, 8th district, Maury Co., TN, has that William was from NC, and living in the household of Granville Pillow. His name was spelled with one "L." this time, his occupation was "Millwright" he was living with Granville Pillow the brother of Gen. Gideon J. Pillow. Granville had a daughter by the name of Susan A. Pillow, age 15.
In the 1860 census, 4th district, Maury Co., TN, William's household, He, Cinthia (his wife), and Susan A. his daughter, age 1 year, apparently named after Granville Pillow's daughter named in the 1850 census. Living with them was Marcena Law, 17 years of age. His name was still spelled with one "L." and occupation "Millwright," but this time he was listed from SC.
On the 1857 marriage license, it signed by John B. Padgett, clerk, Maury Co., TN. William's name was spelled with one "L." again, but by the 1880 census, his Widow and census taker had it spelled with two "Ls." but listed again from NC.
Spelling on grave marker has two "Ls." His marriage license has one "L." He married Cinthia Elizabeth Jones, Oct. 20, 1857 in Maury Co., TN. She was b. Jan. 1, 1836. They are both buried in the Matthew's cemetery, Maury Co., TN. The cemetery was establised in 1811 and named for James Matthews, a revolutionary soldier. William and Cinthia had 5 children: (1.} Must have died as infant. (2.) Susan A. b. Abt. 1860. She married John F. Walker, Nov. 25, 1879. No record of her after 1880. The mother stated in the 1900 census, district 8 that she had 5 children and 3 living. They are as follows: (3.) My grandmother, Hester Ann Willbanks, b. April 21, 1863 d. May 20, 1945 m. Albert Robert Chumley Sept. 24, 1885. (4.) William J. Wheeler Willbanks b. Nov. 1865 d. 1928, he married Martha J. Steward. He was a farmer with 64 acres. (5.) Sarah Emma Willbanks b. Abt. 1870 m J. H. Eddlemon.
All were of Maury Co., TN. except my great grandfather. My great grandmother's name was spelled Cinthia,Sintha, and my Aunt spelled it Sinthia in the family bible. Word has been passed down that Cinthia was a Cherokee, and that William met her at a place called Indian Camp Springs on the Trail of Tears. I have no proof of this, but the picture I have of her, it could be true, she was 32 years younger than william. She was punching a fire in an old log cabin and caught her clothes on fire, the led to her death in 1913.
