Dr George Reid Emery took the pledge while still in Ohio and later threaten to beat up a man who offered him a drink. He also stopped smoking after another doctor advised against it. (1830's)I have a picture of Frances Willard that his daughter Candace Sarah Emery cut from a magazine. (Daughter of Candace R Merrills)Her initials are on the back.Frances was a sufferagette and President of the World Women's Christian Temperance Union.I also have cabinet card photos of Dwight Moody, the 'great' envangelist of Chicago (Moody Bible Institute) and of one of the hymn writers(PP Bliss and wife)published by Moody's brother in law, Revell.Francis Willard worked with Moody for three years.Revell was a soda jerk until Moody set him up in business to publish Moody's sermons.Revell Publishing is now the largest publisher of Christian literature in the World.
Candace's son, Henry Brown Daniels married Elizabeth Mallory whose mother was Frances Willard's adopted sister.I don't believe it was a formal adoption.Ella Jane Luce's father died when she was 10...her mother, Sarah (Lazell) Luce having died 5 years prior. After her father's death, Ella went to live with the Willard's...which was about the time Frances was born.In any case, Ella sometimes used the last name Willard, which is on the marriage certificate of daughter Romanza "Maggie" Mallory.Ella Luce'sgrandfather Zenas Lazell was President of the Mayflower Society.
Elizabeth Mallory had a brother, Josiah Willard Mallory, who lived in Hardin co Iowa and married the daughter, Cora Wilkinson, of the head of the KKK in Iowa (Dilleston Kenyon Wilkinson.)
Josiah Flint Willard was father of Frances.Frances was a close friend of Susan B Anthony.A statute of Frances Willard is the Washington DC capitol rotunda sculpture garden.(Where Teddy Kennedy was stricken during the inaugural luncheon.)Josiah Willard Mallory's grandson Willard Mallory lives about 20 miles from me in St Helens Oregon.
Elizabeth Mallory's grandfather also took the pledge, though his family had made rum and other spirits in Monroe Co Ohio and floated it down the Ohio to new Orleans for sale.He owned a tavern in Paw Paw Grove Vermilion Co IL c 1830, but gave it up and became a farmer after the Black Hawk War.
PS: PP Bliss, wife and children died in a train wreck in Ohio.He escaped by went back into the burning train and died with them.
Lately, I have been working on the wife of Seth Steven Emery, Dr George's son by second wife, Polley Stevens, daughter of Roswell Stevens, the most famous man in Monteville Ohio history. It's taken some time, but I finally figured out her parents. It wasn't easy as Mary elizabeth Hisey married Seth in Springfield Ohio in 1864.
However, Viance Emery wrote that she knew Lizzie as a girl and I found her living with her Uncle Wm Hail Winchester on the same road with the Emery's in 1860.Finally, i figured it out.Hail winchester, it seems, pimped three of his neices and a daughter to neighbors.
Josiah Bartlett Emery b 1820 son of Candace R Willey married Prudence McIntire, an orphan from Ohio. (Prudence is buried in the Canfield Cem Sebastopol Sonoma co Ca)I had to comb through lots of records to figure it out, but I knew William Z tunks had married Armdilla Mcintire, an orphan girl from Ohio the same year.Turns out, they were the daughters of William McIntire and Rebecca Gates (M 1826 Clark co Ohio)(Rebecca was descendant of Stephen Gates of Hingham MA as was ella Jane Luce) .Rebecca Gates' sister Sybil married wm Hail Winchester in 1821 clark co Ohio.
william Z tunks was first married in 1843 Leesburg Union co Ohio to Perlina Winchester who had Albert and Anna J (I have pictures) before she died in 1849.The Gates, Mcintires and Tunks were all from Harmony Twp Clark Co Ohio and removed to Union co before moving to the Stephenson/Winnebago county border in 1843..Mary Elizabeth Hisey's parents, Rev Jacob Hisey and Harriet Winchester were married in Clark Co Ohio in 1840.Jacob died in Wayne Twp Warren Co Ohio in 1847.Her mother remarried to a Mr Willcox and and a son George willcox in 1852 IL before she died 1 Sep 1860 and is buried in the Hulse Cem Pecatonica IL (The Hulse family was also from Clark co Ohio)
William Z Tunks, you mayknow, married a third time, to Candace Sarah (Emery) Daniels.
