I am writing the first book from the American point of view about 19th century rotunda panoramas. These were the biggest paintings in the world, 50 x 400=20,000 square feet, housed in their own rotundas which were 16-sided polygons. Chicago in 1893 had 6 panorama companies and 6 panorama rotundas.Mr.Willoughby was enthusiastic about the BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG panorama, painted in Paris by Paul Philippoteaux, installed at 700 S.Wabash,Chicago, and opened October 1883. Mr.Willoughby brought Philippoteaux and his panorama crew to a new studio at Mott Haven,The Bronx, to produce three more units of GETTYSBURG for Boston(1884),Philadelphia (1885) and New York(1886).Later P.P. built two units of NIAGARA for London (1887) and Paris (1888). I have much info to share.
