I would be glad to discuss the information I am posting here with any one, preferably on this forum and also privately.
The Connection of the Virginia Windham’s (khaki color group) and the Darlington, South Carolina Windham’s (green color group): have long been a mystery of how the Virginia and South Carolina Windham’s come together in Darlington Co. SC.
I will attempt to explain how the Samuel B. Windham who was a son of Eustance Windham, first shows up living very close to John Windham, Sr. as reflected in the 1790 census for Cheraws District, SC.
Clue:Samuel B. Windham owned land in Kershaw County, SC. which indicates he had moved there from Virginia.
John B. Windham provided the following documented information:
30 May 1798Land deed
Kershaw District, South, Carolina
Source: Deeds and Mortgages, Kershaw County, SC, Book E, Page 195
Samuel Windham sold 50 acres of land to Andrew Spradley
Cule:I believe Samuel B. Windham sold this land May 30, 1798 and moved from Kershaw County, South Carolina to Darlington County, SC to take care of his sister, Sarah Sally Windham and her three small children.I believe Samuel B. Windham made this move when he sold his land in Kershaw, Co. SC. in 1798.
Clue:John B. Windham provided documentation that Samuel B. Windham owned land in Kershaw Co. SC.I believe Samuel B. moved first from Virginia toKershaw County, South Carolina, then movedto Darlington County, SC to take care of his sister, Sarah Sally Windham and her three small children after the death of her husband James Windham. He made this move some time between May 30, 1798and when the census was taken in 1790.A Samuel Windham was living near to John Windham, SR as reflected in the 1790 Census Report.
A Samuel Windham was still living very close to John Windham, Sr. and John Windham, Jr. in the 1800 and 1810Darlington Co., SC census reports.
I believe a sister of this Samuel B. Windham, named Sarah (Sally) married firstin 1780-1781 to James Windham, born about 1758,a son of Charles and Anne Tuberville.
Jamesand Sarah (Sally) Windham had three children,James Windham, born 1781-1782, Mary Windham, born abt. 1783, and John Windham, born about 1785.This James Windham was a half brother to John Windham, SR. born about 1740.
James Windham died between the birth of his son John Windham and 1790.Common sense tells me that Samuel B. Windham moved his family in with his sister Sarah (Sally) before the 1790 census was taken.I believe Sarah (Sally) and her three small children is accounted for in the 1790 and the 1800 census reports, living with her brother Samuel.
The 1790 Census clearly show the members listed in the household of John Windham, SR. reflect thatSarah (Sally) and her three children were not living with Old John, SR.
The 1800 Census clearly reflect that Sarah (Sally) and her three children were not living with Old John, SR.
Old John Windham, SR. married Sarah (Sally) Windham in April 1805.
( Document dated May 26, 1856 )
Sarah (Sally) Windham states she was a Windham before she married a Windham. ( Document dated May 26, 1856 )
The only child Old John, SR. and Sarah (Sally) Windham had together was Rachel, born 1807. Other researchers have written thatOld John, SR and Sarah (Sally) Windham had a son named Amos B. Windham, born abt. 1796.I say no way. This Amos B. Windham was a son of Old John Windham, SR. by his first wife.
The 1790 Cheraws District,SC census reflects the following households.( I will add who I believe their father was)
1. Amos Windham. ( son of Charles and Mary )
2. John Windham ( son of Charles and Mary)
3. John Windham ( son of John Windham, SR. )
4. William Windham ( son of Charles and Mary )
(This would be the ancestor of Jim Windham)
5. Samuel Windham ( son of Eustance Windham )
( It appears Rachel (Sally) and her sons and daughter are living with Samuel.)
The 1800 Census Report for Darlington Co., SC reflects the following households among others. ( I will add who I believe their father was)
1. John Windham, SR.(son of Charles and Mary )
2. John Windham, JR. (son of John Windham, SR)
3. Samuel Windham,(Son of Eustance Windham,
The 1810Census Report forDarlington Co., SCreflect the following households among others. ( I will add who I believe their father was)
1. John Windham, SR( son of Charles and Mary )
2. JohnWindham, JR. ( son of John Windham, SR. )
3. John Windham, “min” ( Son of James and Rachel (Sally) Windham )
4. James Windham, “min”(Son of James and Rachel (Sally) Windham )
5. Samuel Windham, ( Son of Eustance Windham)
The family members listed for this John Windham “min” matches the proven children of John and Jane Bartlett Windham. And definitely do not match proven children of John Windham, JR.
Rachel(Sally) Windham now appears to be living with John Windham, SR.
I will follow this message with another message reflecting whatI believe is an accurate tracking of Samuel B. Windham, born abtout 1759, who was a son of Eustance Windham.
