Just a couple of notes: the ß character in Germany represents "ss", thus Johann's middle name would translate to "Theiss".
Also the popular belief that Johann died aboard the Ship en route to America is erroneous.Apparently he never boarded, but died prior to his family's emigration. We found three lists for the ship, one for embarkation, arrival manifest and immigration to Phila.,PA, Johann is not listed on any of these lists. In addition, all the passengers listed at embarkation arrived, there are no passengers listed as "died en route", and the count remains the same. If a passenger had died aboard ship, the manifest would indicate 100 passengers boarding in Germany, with 99 arriving in the US.
Two additional sons, Anthony and Wolfgang emigrated one year prior to Catherine and children.
