The 1870 Rockingham County, Va. Census, part of the central Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia, lists a J. W. Winsborough family residing in McGaheysville, Va., about 7 miles east of Harrisonburg, Va. He was a physician, age 30. Those listed as living in his household included, Martha J., age 30, housekeeper and wife; William C., age 6, son; Annie M., age 4, daughter; Richard E., age 2, son; Charles N., age 7 months, son; Julia Winsborough, age 62, widowed mother; and John Stanley, age 76, male black house servant. A Rockingham County, Va.,deed recorded in Deed Book 8, Page 564, April 9, 1872,Harrisonburg, Va. reveals a sale of his house,lot, and medical practice in Mcgaheysville, Va., to John T. Pence, apparently another physician. Another Rockingham County, Va. deed in Deed Book 8, page 592,Harrisonburg, Va. reveals that his mother, Julia A. Winsborough, who apparently had the surname of Mauzy before her marriage, was involved in a sale of 400 acres of land in the McGaheyesville, Va. area boarding a stream named Cub Run, for $3467.91, on May 9, 1872.
