Winsell family history
I have been researching the Winsell family history. So far I have been able to take it back to the birth of Adam Winsell in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1749. During this period, the Winsell surname was spelled several ways. Most of our early USA ancestors were farmers and were illiterate. I have found that when early public records were recorded, the person transcribing peoples names would write down their phonetic interpretation of each persons name. I have also discovered that many of the people transcribing the records at that time weren’t that adept at spelling themselves and what they wrote down is the name that remains in today’s records.
I have found quite a few surname variations for theaforementioned Adam Winsell , some of them being Vincell, Vencil and Wincel. He is buried in eastern Tennessee as Adam Weitzel, which might possibly be the original spelling of the family surname.
At least one Adams sons, Philip and his sons retained some of the Vincel variations of the surname. I am still looking for information and trying to sort it out.
So far I have been able to track branches of the family from Pennsylvania to Virginia, Tennessee, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, California, Colorado and possibly Missouri. There are early family branches that I haven’t started looking at yet so I’m pretty sure we are in a lot more areas than I just mentioned.
I have a lot of holes in my research and anyone who is interested in this history and would like to exchange information is very welcome.

Thanks for taking the time to read through this,
Jeff Winsell
