Charlotte Smith, born 10 May 1837, married George Willard Proffitt in 1857. One of their children is called Joseph Winton Proffitt. My husband's grandfather was called William Winton Dawson, and my husband's father is Darrell Winton Dawson. My husband's name is Samuel Winton Dawson. Since you posted the Winton Reunion on the Smith Gen Forum site also, I am wondering ifby chance there is a link you are aware of between Wintons and Smiths and that Charlotte Smith's Mother could have been a Winton. I don't have information as to where she was born or any information on her parents, but she is burried in Marion County, Iowa. George Proffitt was born in Tennessee. His daughter, Rachel, who was also born in TN, married George Washington Dawson, my husband's great great grandfather in Wisconsin. Both the Dawson and Proffittfamilies moved to Iowa thereafter.
Perhaps you can give me a little info on this. Winton just isn't a regular name that would be given to a boy, so I always assumed that it is a surname, especially since in all instances it is used as a middle name.
