I have been looking for a Henry Shank, father of Roy W. Shank (b. Nov. 12, 1883).A 1900 Federal census report lists this family:
PA, Somerset Co., Lower Turkeyfoot Twp., Confluence Borough, pg. 184a/b
Shank, Henry, head, b. Sept. 1861, 38M, md. 15yrs., b.PA, parents b. PA
Shank, Carrie, wife, b. May 1860, 40F, b.PA, parents b.PA
Shank, Minnie, daughter, b. Jan. 1883, 17F, single, b.PA
Shank, Ray, son, b. (illegible), single, b.PA
Shank, Cora A. daughter, b. Jan. 1886, 14F, single, b.PA
Shank, Mabel, daughter, b. Feb. 1889, 11F, single, b.PA
Shank, Celia??, daughter, b. Jan. 1886, 4F, single, b.PA
Even though parts of the report are illegible, I have confidence in it, since I know Roy W. Shank had sisters named Minnie, Mabel, Cora, and Edna.Since that time I have been searching for the family of Henry Shank.Roy was born in Brookville, PA in Jefferson County. There is an 1880 Federal census report that lists the following family:
Pennsylvania, Jefferson Co., Knox Twp., family 124, dwelling 124
Shank, Henry, 51M, wd. Laborer, b. PA, parents b. CT
Shank, Maggie, daughter, 21F, s, Keeping house, b. PA parents b. PA
Shank, Henry A., son, 19M, b. PA, parents b. PA
Shank, Ettie, daughter, 17F, b. PA, parents b.PA
Shank, Clara, daughter, 10F, b.PA, parents b.PA
Judging by the names and ages of the children, this seems to me as though it might be the family of Henry and Esther Shank, (there is another posting on this forum that lists the census reports of that family for the years 1850, 1860, and 1870)and that Esther died sometime between 1870 and 1880. Could this be the same family, and do you know of any firmer connection between this family and Roy Shank?
There is another thing I am curious about, which perhaps someone who know these families better than I do can explain. In the 1860 census report there is a notation that Esther cannot read and write. In 1870 there was the same notation, plus a note in the column "deaf, dumb, blind, idiotic, insane".Could Esther have been blind? That would certainly explain why she could not read or write.
Thank you for your help.
