Hello! I just made some breakthroughs on my STANLEY line that have led me to Morris Witham of the 1850 White County, Indiana, census. (Through what appears to be his daughter - Martha J. Witham who married Solomon Stanley in Porter County, Indiana, on 29 Oct 1842.)
Researchers seem to be consistent in sharing the following information on Morris:
b. 24 November 1777 (Saco River, Maine) d. 25 February 1854 (White County, Indiana) bur. Clark Cemetery (White County, Indiana)
m. Rebecca BILLINGS b. July 1791 (Maine) d. September 1853 (White County, Indiana)
So, is there a source I can check out for these dates? What is the source for Rebecca's surname? Does anyone know in which Maine county Morris was born/lived? And, of course, the usual favourite question: any interesting theories on Morris' parents?
Also, I don't know if this will be helpful to anyone, but on the 1880 census for Nuckolls County, Nebraska (p235b - Spring Creek Pct), Martha (Witham) Stanley says that her father was born in Maine and her mother was born in Massachusetts. I know this could easily be an error on the censustaker's or Martha's part, but if it's the latter, maybe it points to some sort of Massachusetts connection for the BILLINGS family, even if Martha confused it up a bit.
Replies to the forum instead of email are appreciated so everyone can benefit. (Also, my inbox tends to be a bit of a bottomless bog - but if I can share something, just holler.) Thanks! -S.
