I'm trying to find an old friend. He is Paul Yue Wong, born in northern China around 1954 - 1956.He would be about 47 years old now or so.
His story, as I understand it, is that he was born in northern China, a descendant of Chinese royalty. His mother left the family when Paul was only 6 months old and he was raised by his father and some concubines (?).He had 2 older brothers by his mother.
With the fall of Communism in China, his family fled to Hong Kong, where his father remarried (or maybe before leaving China) and started another family, with two more boys.Paul's father was the first syndicated cartoonist in Hong Kong -- well known.
At the age of 15 or 16, Paul's father gave him some money and Paul emigrated to Vancouver, Canada, speaking no English. There he learned the hard way to fend for himself and to speak English. He joined the Outward Bound program, eventually becoming an instructor in mountain climbing and survival skills. He also went to college and earned a degree in architecture, writing and illustrating an architectural text book.He became the first Chinese Kiyak Lifeguard in Canada, and was honored by Pierre Trudeux and Prince Phillip for teaching mountain climbing skills to the blind. He has climbed Mt. McKinnley, K-2, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Hood.He was leading a climb on Mt. Hood when Mt. St. Helens blew, causing his party to get trapped temporarily in an avalanche.
Paul and I attended The Art Institute of Philadelphia from 1982 to 1984, taking the Interior Design class. In Philadelphia, he had relatives -- a cousin, Michael, who had a dentil lab.Michael was married to Angeline and they had 2 sons and another on the way, I believe. They lived in New Jersey, worked in Philadelphia.Michael's mother, Paul's aunt, lived with them.
From there, Paul and I moved together back out west -- me to Portland and Paul to Seattle, where he had once lived before. He got a design job in an architectural firm, and I think later in an interior design firm.I think he also had other part time jobs working in restaurants or something.
Paul's father emigrated from Hong Kong to the US, settling in Palm Springs, CA.
I have lost track of Paul and would really love to find him again.Does any of this sound familiar to anyone out there?Do you know where Paul Yue Wong is?
