I am descended from Francis William Woodgate, of Sevenoaks, Kent, born 1835 (I think), emigrated to Argentina, made a bundle, his descendants lost it all, so I came to the US and started it all over again. There are many flavors of Woodgates in Argentina, mostly in Buenos Aires, since Francis lured two of his brothers to Argentina, and they all had considerable issue.
That branch of the family tree was published in "El Nobiliario del Rio de La Plata" (alas! in Spanish!), a copy of which exists at the New York Public Library (I read it there in the 60's).It traces the name back to the year 900 and, along the way, it turns out that a certain Arthur Woodgate, Anglican priest, married a granddaughter of Oliver Cromwell (don't hold it against me; I love he Irish). However, I was not named after that Arthur.Rather, an Arthur of Spanish (Asturias) lineage.
I understand, also, that Woodgate and Woodyat are the same name, which for some reason changed spelling in the 17th century or so. Sometime ago I got a sales letter offering me a "List of Woodgates" so I replied asking what kind of list that was, and told them about what I say here. They replied that it was a compilation of all Woodgate subscribers to the phone system in the US.And for this they wanted $45.00??!!I can do that myself, thank you.
