I have just recently learned that my gr. gr. grandfather, Daniel George marrried Mary Jane Hyler/Hiler as his second wife on 18 June 1882 in Brighton, Washington Co., IA.This was her second marriage also. Her first marriage was to John or Jonathan Hiler on 14 Apr, 1866.I believe they were probably divorced as I find John Hiler and Mary together on the 1870 census for Louisa Co., IA with the following children, Samuel age 3 and Sarah, age 1.I then find John Hiler on the 1880 census for Oakland, Louisa Co., IA, without Mary, with the following children:Samuel, age 13, Sarah age 11, Emma L. J., age 8 and Gracia L. Age 2.John's marital status is indicated as a D as in divorced.
Since Mary and Daniel George were married in 1882, perhaps Mary left John to marry Daniel.According to a family letter that we have, from John Wesley George, my gr.grandfather and the son of Daniel George, to John's mother, the first wife, Mary Abigail Martin, Daniel and Mary Hiler had a son named Thomas and that "the lad did not look like any of the George families and had red hair like his mother, Mary Hiler".
Would anyone with family in the Wapello, Louisa Co., IA have any information about Mary Jane and Daniel George. We would like to know if they had any more children, where did they die and where are they buried?Where did they go after being married?Family folk lore has always thought that Daniel went to Louisiana after his divorce from Mary Abigail Martin.I sincerely hope that someone out there has the answers and thank you in advance. Please feel free to e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org
