Hi Garneta,
My maiden name is Wortman.Emma Irena was my great grandmother. My father though a lot of her. He would ride out of Chicago on his bike in the 20's after work to spend the week end with his grandparents, often. She was married to Amos Wortman who was a postal worker.I don't know if he was the post master.I know he drove a rural route at one time with a horse and buggy. The grand children loved to ride with him because he was a fun person.
I will tell you what I know of the Harlows which isn't much because I'm stumped going back any further then Emma's
father William Holmes Harlow who was born June 28, 1810.He and his wife Lucy Montague Safford born April 28, 1828 in Cambridge, Vermont (Her death certificate says she was born May 8), left Malone, N.Y. about July 8 1849 and settled in near Dundee, IL.He died Jan. 22, 1852.They had 6 children:Matilda Algeline (1838) William Henry(1841), Lucy A. (1843), E. Safford (1845), Orson (1848), Emma Irena(1850).W.H. Harlow died Jan. 22, 1852.Lucy married two more times and had two children with her second husband. She is buried along side of Wortman's in Sheridan under last married name Lucy Safford Miller d. Oct. 16, 1906.I don't know where William Holmes Harlow is buried.
Matilda's granddaughter did a lot of geneology and gave me much information.I have a family picture with Safford in it.I know he fought in the Rev. War.According to my source he moved to Denver and died in 1970.He had a son and a daughter.
I copied Emma Irena's obit fromthe Somonauk Reveille. The article does not give any data about her parents.Only her birth as June 8, 1850 near Elgin, IL.
I would like to hear more about the Harlows. My grandfather was Emma'sson Raymond Amos born in Sheridan (5 miles from Somonauk) March 9, 1876.
By the way we now share the same last name! Nancy
