Sorting out the various John Wrights is tough as there are not sufficient data to be sure in the extant tax and court records.Without presenting the data, let me give you a list of various men named John Wright in Mecklenburg, Brunswick, and Lunenburg Co., Va., from about 1750 to 1810.(This is the time frame I have researched.)These identifications should be regarded as hypotheses, not as established facts.I am using the nomenclature suggested by Robert N. Grant, since we cannot use generation numbers. The year is the year of death and the place is place of death. When these are not known, I have simply listed them based upon where the data were found.
Mecklenburg Co., VA
1.1832 John Wright of Clarke Co., Ga.This is the man I have been tracing, and I have posted a detailed, albeit circumstantial, argument for this identification. He appears as John Wright (Fox) on the tax lists and court records.
2.1820 John Wright of Mecklenburg Co., Va., son of 1819 Reuben Wright of Mecklenburg Co., Va.
3.John Wright, son of 1829 Austin Wright of Mecklenburg Co., Va., who left the tax roles about 1805 for parts unknown, at least to me.
4.1755 John Wright of Flatt Creek, Lunenburg Co., Va.Many reports do not seem to recognize there are two men in then Lunenburg Co. named John Wright who died in 1755.This man was living in what became Mecklenburg Co., VA., and is the father of Laban Wright, who disappeared from the tax lists, and probably died about 1788 in Mecklenburg Co., Va.He has a land connection to 1829 Austin Wright of Mecklenburg Co., Va., and I would postulate that he was the father of 1782 Robert Wright of Brunswick Co., VA., 1784 Uriah Wright of Brunswick Co., Va., and John Wright of Waqua Creek, but I have no data to prove this.
5.John Wright of Buffalo Creek, Mecklenburg Co., VA, 1779-1784.It has been suggested that he moved to Halifax Co., and came from the Lunenburg Co., Va, Wright family.See below.
6.John Wright of the Upper District, Mecklenburg Co., Va., 1790-1791.This man appears to have turned 21 in 1791, so would have a putative birth year of 1770.He appears in association with Job Wright, who has been identified by others as 1838 Job Wright of Rutherford Co., NC.He has also been associated with Nathan Wright, who has been identified by others as 1836 Nathan Wright of Lincoln Co., Ga.I have seen it suggested these were children of 1755 John Wright of Stony Creek, Lunenburg Co., VA., but I have reservations about this.(See below.)
Lunenburg Co., VA
1.1755 John Wright of Stony Creek, Lunenburg Co., Va.This man appears to be the immigrant ancestor for all of the Wright families of Lunenburg Co., Va.I have not examined every tax list, and have not found a copy of the will of 1804 Thomas Wright of Lunenburg Co., Va., who is almost surely the eldest son of this man. These men were all intertwined with the Mize and Jarrett families, and I think they have often been confused with each other. But here goes:
2.John Wright of the 1810 Census and brother of 1818 Parsons Wright of Putnam Co., Ga. is probably a son of 1804 Thomas Wright of Lunenburg Co., Va.
3.John Wright, son of 1755 John Wright of Stony Creek, and brother of 1804 Thomas Wright. This man certainly exists, but to date, I have not identified a death record for him.He may also be 1834 John Wright of Jasper Co., Ga.(RW pension application) as he was reportedly quite old in 1834.
4.John Wright, son of John, who may be the man who appears on Buffalo Creek in 1784.(This man would be a first cousin to the man on the 1810 Census.)
5.There is possibly a fifth man named John Wright who was described as of Brunswick Co. when he sold land near the Stony Creek family. He may be one of the two younger men, though.
Brunswick Co., Va.
1.John Wright of Waqua Creek, who may, or may not be, a brother of 1782 Robert Wright of Brunswick Co., Va., and 1784 Uriah Wright of Brunswick Co., Va.I think he is the man listed as John Wright (Taylor) as well, for reasons documented in my post.
2.John Wright, Jr. of the northern district. As discussed elsewhere, I think he is probably 1832 John Wright of Clarke Co., Ga.
3.John Wright who appears in association with 1793 James Wright of Brunswick Co., Va.He has been identified by others as John Wright of Greene Co., Ohio.He looks to be associated with the Randle family.
4.1810 John Wright of Brunswick Co., Va., who apppears to be the John Wright living with Thomas Washington. He may be a brother of 1819 Rebuen Wright of Mecklenburg Co., Va., but I have no evidence to establish this with certainty.
5.In 1792 John Wright (jr.) of the southern district shows up in association with Jarrett Wright, who has been identified by others as 1820 Jarrett Wright of Greene Co., GA.This man seems likely to be part of the Lunenburg family, although I have not studied the question enough to be sure.He may be a cousin of the two younger John Wrights or he might be one of the two already identified.
6.There is also a John Wright who married into the Brewer family and lived on Rattlesnake Creek, Brunswick Co., Va.He sold out in 1806, and seems connected to Samuel Wright, who is almost surely a son of George and Sophia Wright. He may or may not be the same as #3.I have not examined the data in sufficient detail to reach a conclusion.
As you can see, there may have been as many as 18 men named John Wright in these three counties during the 60 year period I have examined.I feel confident that some of these people are duplicates--I simply haven't been able to reduce the list yet.I also think I can identify at least four, and possibly five clusters of families. There are the Wrights of Lunenburg, who all appear to be in the same clan. There are the Wrights of Waqua Creek, and later Mecklenburg Co., the Wrights of Rattlesnake Creek, and the Wrights of Hays Creek, both in Brunswick Co., Va., and, depending upon further data, the family of the Wrights of Flatt Creek, now Mecklenburg Co., Va., who may or may not be related to the Wrights of Waqua Creek.
Bear in mind, these statements should be seen as hypothesis generation.Any data you, or anyone else has that can help us with these clusters, is appreciated.I have not yet posted the Brunswick Co. data, as I have not completed my examination of the court order books.I have also not done detailed tax list and court record studies in Lunenburg Co., but have looked at most of the usual data for Mecklenburg Co., Va., which is why I have posted the data that I have.
