This is one of the areas I am working on. I have my own family tree directly back to 1774 in Woking and am now working on the siblings at the various levels in the tree. I’ve been fortunate that the names in my direct line are not common. A lot of the sibling names are common so I am gathering all Wye data for the area and so constructing all the Wye families of the area. So far the areas I am covering are Woking St Peter, Woking St John, Worplesdon, Send and Riply, Horsell, Bisley, Chobham and a little bit in Shere.
Now to Richard. Here is the info I have on all the Richard Wyes of the area. The alternative spellings are as they appear in the sources:
Woking St Johns Marriage Register (original): 1853 Oct 8th Richard WYE, 21, Bachelor, Labourer, Woking, Father: Richard WHY, Labourer To Sarah Peters, 19, Spinster,Woking, Father: James Peters, Labourer Marriage was after Banns Witnesses: William WHY Martha WHY All parties signed with their mark rather than name. Remember the witnesses, I will come back to these.
From the IGI I have Albert WHY born to Richard and Sarah WHY, christened 2 apr 1865.
From the IGI I have Stephen WYE born to Richard and Sarah WYE, christened 2 apr 1844.
In St Johns registers on 15 Mar 1857 there is a George WHYE, aged 16, son of Richard WHYE, marrying Rosanna Offord. Witnesses John HOOPER and Martha WYE
From the IGI and Surrey Marriage Index there is a marriage between Richard WYE and Leah TUNNEL 2 Oct 1819 in Send and Ripley. From the IGI they had a son James, christened 19 Apr 21.
From the IGI and Surrey Marriage Index there is a marriage between Richard WYE and Hannah BEDDINGSTOCK as you already know. From the IGI they had a son Richard. However, the IGIs source from this is Patron Sheets, NOT original records. I will get around to the original/Fiche records at some point.
From the IGI and GRO index, there is a marriage between Richard WYE and Martha WYE on 12 Sep 1868.
From the IGI, from Patron Sheets, we have Richard Wye born to John and Mary WYE 1796.
From the 1881 census we have in the same household: Richard WYE, head, 48 Martha WYE, wife, 51 Frederick WYE, son, 32
Coming back to those witnesses. There was a William WYE married to a Martha. They had a son Frederick. I believe that Martha was widowed and remarried your Richard as his second wife, although I have yet to prove it.
But from this evidence, it is pointing to Richard WYE and Hannah BEDDINGSTOCK as being the parents of your Richard but I still have lots more evidence to look at. I haven’t gone through the earlier censuses for the area yet. All the IGI entries need checking against the originals. That birth of Stephen WYE could be a transcription error on the year. I’d be very interested to know your tree below this for a few generations. My tree goes back to James, son of the John and Mary WYE listed above.
My next job is to go through the Worplesdon marriage registers for all the WYE entries. This should clear up a few connections. I still have a lot of original sources to go through yet and the IGI is patchy.
Beware of the spelling variations in the area: WYE, WHYE, WIE, WHY.
