I'm wondering if my ggggrandmother, Martha Elizabeth Wittekiend (nee Yogle/yagle) might be the aunt of your Nicholas Yagel.Martha was born 21 Apr 1789 in Rauschenberg, Hessen Province, Prussia.Tobias & Martha lived near Quincy, Adams Co., IL.Adams Co. is across the river from Lewis & Marion Co. MO.Camp Point, IL and Brookfield, MO are about 133 miles apart.
I found this obituary for Martha: Quincy Daily Whig, March 26, 1886, Page 3 Obituary Camp Point Journal
On March 16, 1886, at the residence of her son Thomas, Mother Elizabeth Whitican (nee Yogle), fell asleep having reached the age of 96 years 10 months and 23 days. She was born in 1789 in the city of Roussianburg, in a Hessian Province, in Prussia and married Tobias Whitican in 1811.One of the noted acts of her life was that of entertaining a squad of French soldiers as they marched to the fatal battlefield of Waterloo. She came to this country in 1832, first settling in Baltimore, then in Pittsburg, and since 1838 in Adams County, Ill.She was a consistent member of the German Methodist Episcopal Church since 1848.
Thick German accents probably contributed to the various spellings of the Yogle, Yagel, Yaegle, etc. name.
Please let me know if you've found any connections for your Yagle kin.
