Connie,
The only information I have, myself found is that Sir George Yeardley's name was changed from Yardley after being knighted by the King of England, before returning to Jamestown, Virginia as Governor in the early 1600's. I've seen conflicting information on his father, Ralph's last name spelling of "Yeardley" or "Yardley". Current day spelling variations exist from generation to generation and family to family branches.
There is a very interesting few paragraphs in Jonathan Yardley's book "Our Kind of People-the story of an American family, page 51 that goes into the Old English "Gyrdaleah" which he states means "a woodland from which yards or spars are taken", and over the centuries evolved thru "Gerdeslai to Jerdelai to Jeardelegh to Yerdele to Yardeley and finely to Yardley. There are 2 or 3 more pages relating to early family genealogy (which I already had from other early sources). Most of the book is about his parents and close family (I was hoping for more early genealogy). I purchased my copy over the Internet, but it is in many libraries. I have yet to acquire some of the other Yardley books, including the one by Richard Sears, which is mentioned by others in messages in this and other forums.
