Origin of YELTON name
I will be grateful if someone can tell me the origin of the family name of Yelton.
My earliest known relative was Charles G. Yelton, one of three brothers born in Stafford Co., VA in the early 1700s.They are the earliest record I have been able to locate for this family. My grandfather, Vaden Columbus Yelton, lived in Butler, Pendleton County, Kentucky.
My family tradition says the name is Welsh.I was in Wales this past summer and the Welsh National Library has no record of the name and said it was not a Welsh name. The early English Census contains only three families with the name Yelton.
I am inclined to believe the name is a derivation of a similar name.Yelverton for instance.
Does anyone have comments?
Vaden Mortimer Yelton
