Followup to my previous. My great grandfather was Martin Jopp (that spelling is on his headstone in St. John's Kentucky). His wife's headstone is spelled "Yopp."So name apparently changed after immigration.Name is also spelled "Hiob"."Hiob" is German Jewish word for "Job."Apparently our ancestors were unlucky.Martin had a relative (brother?) named George Jopp who apparently came through Virginia because the census records show one of his children being born there. Both were from Bavaria. It appears that they were escaping the general upheaval which culminated in 1849.Original immigrants and most descendants are Roman Catholic which fits with Bavaria because Bavaria is still predominately Roman Catholic.I have checked the census data at the National Archives and have been unable to find more information on arrival port, dates, etc.Martin Yopp had eight children. One son, Andrew, is my grandfather.Andrew had eleven. His son, Edward, is my father.I would love to have information on what part of Bavaria the original immigrants came from.
