Information:Jon 'Simon Younker (Joncker) was born circa 1780 Bavaria, Germany. He married Nina (Anna) Horton?
On 14 Oct 1787, Hans Hen., Henrica, Johann Henrich, and Jon Simon JONCKER arrived in Philadelphia, PA, aboard the Dorothea. Records for Jon Simon JONCKER are recorded as "Simon YONKER or YOUNKER." It was German custom to give children two given names at baptism, a spiritual name and a secular name. The first name was the spiritual name (a saint's name) and the second name was a secular or common name, which is the name the person was known by. The spiritual name, usually to honor a favorite saint, was usually given to all the children of that family of the same sex. Thus the boys might be Johan Henrich, Johan Simon, etc. Girls would be named Anna Barbara, Anna Margaret, etc. After baptism, these people would be known by their secular name. Thus these people would be known respectively as Henrich, Simon, Barbara, and Margaret in legal and secular records. For males, the saint's name Johan or John was particularly heavily used by many German families. The child's secular name was really John, if and only if, at baptism he was named only John, usually Johannes, with no second given name. Jon 'Simon is listed as head of household on the 1820 census Newcastle Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, as Simeon Yonker. The census lists his family as two males under 10 (Henry was about 10, and Horton was about 2); one male 26-44 (Jon Simon, age 40); two females under 10 (daughters?, age 7 and 9); one female 16-25 (daughter? age 16) and one female 26-44 (wife, Nina or Anna). It is unknown why John (age 20-29), Peter (age 25), or Jacob (age 12) are not listed.1 Jon 'Simon is listed as head of household on the 1830 census Newcastle Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, as Simon Younker. The census lists his household as one male 15-19 (Horton, age 12), one male 20-29 (Henry, age 20), one male 50-59 (Jon Simon, age 50), one female 10-14, one female 15-19, one female 50-59 (wife, Nina or Anna).2 On 2 Jul 1832, Simon Younker, of Coshocton County, Ohio, purchased eighty acres described as "the West half of the North East quarter of Section nineteen, in Township six, of Range nine of the unappropriated lands in the Military District subject to sale at Zanesville, Ohio, containing forty acres."3 Jon 'Simon is listed as head of household on the 1840 census Newcastle Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, as Simon Yonker. The census lists his household as one male 20-29 (Horton, age 22), one male 50-59 (Jon Simon, age 50), one female 10-14 (daughter?), and one female 50-59 (wife, Nina or Anna).4 The 1850 Census list Simon and Anna YUNKER, both age 70, residing in New Castle Township. He stated he was born in Germany, she in New Jersey. Also in their household was their son, Horton, age 32, born in NY, and his wife, Catherine, 30, born in OH and their seven children. Jon 'Simon is listed as head of household on the 1850 census Newcastle Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, as Simon Yunker. The census listed him as age 70, farmer, owning real estate worth $2,309, born in Germany. Enumerated with him were Nina (Anna) HORTON?, Horton YOUNKER, Catherine (--?--), Jemima YOUNKER, Perry YOUNKER, Christina (Jestena) YOUNKER, Hilda? YOUNKER, Jackson YOUNKER, A daughter, and Mary E. YOUNKER.5 He was enumerated with Peter L. YOUNKER on the 1860 census Jefferson Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, as Simon Younker. He was listed as age 79, owning real estate worth $4,000 and person property worth $1,000, born in Bavaria.6
