John Youse was born in 1747 in Germany. His obituary from the Reading Adler, Tuesday, March 4 1823, reads,
"Jaus - Died the 22nd of last February in Rockland Twp., of this county.Johannes Jaus in the 76th year of his life.He was born in Germany, came to America as a boy of 6 years of age and served in the Revolutionary War under Washington."
I also have copies of his Revolutionary War pension record, where he is refered to as John Youse.
Youse is definitely the Americanized spelling of Jauss or Jaus.
Also, in 1753, a Martin Jauss arrived from Muhlhausen on the Enz on the ship Patience. It arrived in Philadelphia Monday, Sept. 17, 1753.I believe this Martin Jauss is very likely the father of John Youse / Johannes Jauss, but I cannot prove it because the ship's list does not show the names of family members. The timing is certainly correct though.
