I have one that has been puzzeling me for years. One great great grandfather was named John Sommerville. He lived in Oconomowoc for several years with his wife Janet (Armstrong) Sommerville and their children. The last evidence on Janet is the 1860 federal census. That was taken in June 1860. She is shown on that. On a later document, John Fathers pention Application for his son's death as a prisioner in the Civil War, dated August 9, 1876, he states that Janet had died in Oconomowoc in May 1860. John was married to his second wife, Sophia Zabel on October 12, 1860 per a widows pention application That she filed. On it and her wedding record it say she married John as Sophia Zabel. Another document on the Pattison/Patterson hamily says that a Stanford Lindsay Patterson married Augusta Louisa Sommerville in January 1880. It further states that Augusta was born Februay 15, 1869 probably in Wisconsin. It lists her stepfather as John Sommerville who had married her mother. With the dates this 'mother' has to be Sophia. The date of Augusta's birth is prior to John and Sophia getting married. On one of Sophia and John's dughter's death certificate (daughter was Lenora Ethelinda Sommerville Flury) one of her sons has Lenora's mother's nams as Sophia Douglas. I seem toi remember seeing the 1860 census and it showing a Zabel family in Oconomowoc almost right next to the Sommerville family. My question now is, was there a Douglas family anywhere close? The really plausible explenation is the both Sophia's husband and John's wife died. That would match with the resulting data we have. Can someone look at the 1860 census for Oconomowoc for me? I think the answer is with that Douglas name.
