Hi Oliver,
My GG Grandfather Jacob Zang(1820-1898) came from the same region as your ancestor. The region known as Saarland near the border
of France, also called Lorraine. Jacob was a farmer so I think that he was raised on a farm. His father's name was Michael and I think I have found the correct Michael Zang in Differten, Saarland. Jacob had siblings and cousins who also came to the US. In 1848 it seems that a whole generation moved to the US. Jacob went to the Scranton, Pa. area, where he had relatives, and then settled on a farm near Chester, Il.
The Zang coat of arms is the tongs and bellows of a blacksmith. Zange translates to tongs.
