Hi Michael.I am glad to know so much about the fate of Zarates in the Philippines. Here in Brasilia, I am a quarter Zarate, although my family name does not bear the name and there is a close friend of mine, who is descendent of the same family in Northern Tolima (central Colombia). her name is Margarita Urdaneta (her mother is Dona Isabel Gutierrez Zarate). She was notorious in Colombia because, as you may have heard, there was a disaster in Novermber, 1985; as a rsesult of a vulcano eruption, the city of Armero was entirely destroyed (30.000 deaths). Most of the Zarate family died there and she was determined to re-construct the town in nearby village of Guayabal.Because of her efforts she was elected the woman of the year in Colombia (perhaps in 1989 or 90? I cannot remember).Well, she is still very active in Colombia. We, as the Philippines, are going through a terrible violence that could be labelled a Civil War.Part of my family is still in Colombia and now, I am a 40 y. old teacher at the University of Brasilia. Thanks for your information.I have met many pilipinos at the US (I lived in Los Angeles for a while and I have worked in collaborationwith the UCSF in San Francisco). You are our brethren in the Pacific islands. Abrazo,Edgar.
