The Cemetery where this headstone is located is the Howard Cemetery...about 20 miles east of Prineville Oregon. Other than John Martin Zevely on this stone, M.A. Zevely is his older sister Mary Ann.She was born in Missouri on 9 February 1819 and died on 24 February 1887 in Crook County.Mary was a big lady who was also blind. We speculate that she had diabetes but of course there was no defined disease for this condition at that time...nor many doctors around.Nonetheless, she lived to travel by wagon over the Oregon Trail with her brother and others and to live 68 years. Her family took good care adn perhaps her other genes also took good care of her! This cemetery is interesting in that most of it is deeded to the county but the fenced area where the Zevelys are buried is not. This information is from the caretaker I spoke to on 5/8/08. He did not know who owns it...probably us Zevelys! All others in the fenced area are family except the Milligans...my Aunt Mary, who has visited the cemetery often, does not know who these people are. THe other family member in this cemetery is located in the separate fenced grave just to the south of the Zevely plot. This is little Roma Hon who died at less than a year of age. (1909-1910) She got into the wallpaper paste and ate it.Once this hardened there was nothing the desperate family could do.They did find a doctor, but he, unfortunately, could do nothing either.I believe that this was such atraumatic experience for the clan that they soon moved to Stevenson Washington as the next child (Hester) was born there in 1913.
