It was Georg Zophel who came from Germany and setteled in Rhinebeck, NY in about 1710. He was born in Hasselbach, Germany the son of Georg Zophel and Anna Catherina Walden. The zu and feld of our name came from a mispelling of the pronunciation of Zophel. yes in German feld means field in english but it does not reflect our heritage or occupation. Now people from Haselbach were agrarian and when they arrived in the US they worked for their property with their agrarian skills. It is asafe to assume farmer skills were in place from our decendants.
