Sample JPEG Images

Here are two sample sets of photos that illustrate changing image dimensions and quality to effect file size, download time and browser display. The first set is derived from a recent color print, and the second from a turn-of-the-century sepia print. Both photos were 4" x 6" and scanned at 150 dots per inch (d.p.i.), yielding uncompressed images of 600 pixels wide by 900 pixels high, and uncompressed file sizes of about 1.6 MBytes.

Each original scan was reduced to 100 d.p.i. (400 x 600 pixels) and 50 d.p.i (200 x 300 pixels). The original and reductions were then JPEG compressed at both maximum and low qualities.
