George J. Basler, Jr. (b. July 20, 1884, d. April 09, 1959)George J. In April of 1918, George Jr. turned himself in to Sheriff Ladner of Grant County for shooting and killing Fridolin Schindler. He was arrested and placed under a bond of $10,000 for his appearance for a preliminary hearing on April 18, 1918. George's trial began on a Monday in early October of 1919. 90 people were summoned for jury duty before 12 could be found. Testimony for the state was completed by noon on Wednesday. After futher debate, the jury retired at six o'clock and reached a verdict by midnight. George was found "Not Guilty". In 1915, F. Schindler pleaded guilty to the charge of cruel treatment in his family and was given a fine of $750 which was remitted on the condition that he furnish $10 per month to the support of his children for the next two years and not molest them during that time.
George and his family relocated to Washington State in the late 1920's. George owned and operated a hotel in Toppenish, Washington for several years. He then owned a farm near Spokane, Washington, before retiring to Granger, Washington.
