FINAL RITES TODAY FOR DR. W.S. BARKER
Services Will Be Held at 3 p.m. For Well Known Dentist
Funeral services for Dr. William Samuel Barker will be conducted this afternoon at the First Christain church.The Rev. C. H. Livesay of Wytheville,Va.,the Rev. George D. West and the Rev. J. E. Hicks will officiate.Burial will follow in the East Hill Cemetery.
Dr. Barker died at 9:15 o'clock Friday night,at the age of 74,at his home,801 Georgia avenue.He had been in declining health for the last year and became seriously ill three weeks ago.
He was born in Piney Flats, Tenn.,the son of Rev. Wilson G. and Sarah Lyon Barker.His father was the founder of Buffalo Institute which is now Milligan College.
After graduating from Milligan College and the Kansas City Dental College,Dr. Barker practiced dentistry in Palmyra,Missouri,until coming to Bristol 33 years ago.
A man of culture and high sense of honor,Dr. Barker played a prominent part in Bristol's social,professional and church life.He was an elder in the First Christian church and an active leader in the work of that church for the duration of his residence in Bristol.His friendly and genial disposition,together with his other characteristics,won the admiration of all whom he came in contact,and he numbered his friends by the hundreds in Bristol and throughout this section.
Dr. Barker was first married to Miss Addie Lynn Brundage.To that union were born three children,Wilson B. Barker of Johnson City, Tenn.,Mrs. Charlotte Barker Easley of Richmond,Va.,and Alfred L. Barker of Toledo,Ohio,all of whom survive.
In 1907 her married to Miss Mary Porter of Lynchburg,Va.,To this union two sons were born,W. S. Barker, Jr., of Washington, D.C.,and Jack P. Barker of Bristol,who survive.
Other survivors include two nieces,Miss Glenn Gottshall of Harrisburg, Pa.,and Mrs. W. T. Givens of Johnson City,Tenn.
The body will remain at the Blevins Funeral Home until time for the funeral,when the remains will be taken to the First Christian church.Flowers are to be sent to the funeral home.
