256.John Battelle, Sr., born July 01, 1652 in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachussetts; died September 20, 1712 in Dedham, Massachussetts (or 9/30/1713).He was the son of 512. Thomas Battelle and 513. Mary Fisher. He married 257. Hannah Holbrook September 18, 1678 in Dedham, Massachussetts (Source: Dedham Records, p. 17, Marriages).

"Battell, John, came from France to America and settled in Dedham, Mass., and died Sept. 30, 1713, leaving a son John, b. in 1689, married Abigail Draper Jan. 17, 1710, died Sept. 14, 1729, leaving a son John who was born April 30, 1717, married Mehitable Sherman, sister of the patriot Roger Sherman, signer of the declaration, and died Nov. 18, 1800.""History of Torrington, Conn.," by Rev. Samuel Orcutt, 1878, vol. 2, page 649, copied by JRB. The above information is repeated almost word for word on page 508, vol. 1, "History of Ancient Woodbury, Ct. from 1659 to 1854" by Wm. Cothern, 1854. Cothren's volume 2 has the correct information - i.e., that John is the son of Thomas of Dedham - on pages 1471 and 1472. It would seem, although not stated there, that vol. 2, written 25 years later in 1879, was intended to correct volume 1\
"John Battell, b. July 1, 1652; christened July 3, 1652; died Sept 20, 1712; all in Dedham, Mass. (Norfolk Co.); son of Thomas Battell and Mary Fisher; married Nov. 18, 1678 at Dedham to Hannah Holbrook of Dedham, she born of Thomas and Jane Holbrook, about 1654."

"Elizabeth, b. abt 1692 Dedham; m. Wm. S. Mallage 10 Apr.
"John, b. abt 1693 Plympton; married Mary or Martha
"William, b. abt 1696 Dedham; married Parnel or Parnella French 19 June 1718."Kathy Shore, 1977. It would seem to me that the John born in Plimpton may not have been a son of John & Hannah. Kathy, or someone at the LDS church, seemed to find people with the same surname and then assume they were children, even if born in different towns -- JRB
The World Family Tree CD vol. 1, tree #1388, indicates that John & Hannah also had a son Nathaniel, whose daughter Martha married a James Mellen b. 1731/2. (James Battle Jr. married Ruhamie Mellen!)
"BATTELLE, or BATTLE, JOHN, Dedham, eldest s. of Thomas, m. 18 Nov. 1678, Hannah Holbrook, had Hannah, b. 26 July 1680; Mary, 12 Mar. 1684; John, 17 Apr. 1689; Ebenezer, 2 Jan. 1692; and d. 30 Sept. 1713; JONATHAN, Dedham, br. of the precede. m. 15 Apr. 1690, Mary Onion, perhaps d. of Robert, had Martha, b. 13 Mar. foll.; Jonathan, 3 Jan 1693; Sarah, 20 Oct. 1698; and Abigail, 11 Dec. 1699. ROBERT, Boston, d. 23 Dec. 1658, perhaps was only trans. visit. and if not, I can tell no more, but that in Dearborn's book, call. Boston Notions, p. 44, he is call. freem. 1657, when no such name appears, nor even any bapt. name of Robert in that yr.THOMAS, Dedham 1642, m. 5 Sept. 1648, Mary, d. of Joshua Fisher, had Mary, b. 6 bapt. 12 May 1650; John, 1, bapt. 3 July 1653; Sarah, b. 1654; Jonathan, 24 July 1658; and Martha, 19 Aug. bapt 9 Sept. 1660, d. at 14 yrs. He was freem. 1654, in 1664 liv. at Sudbury, but of D. again in 1674. His w.d. 7 Aug. 1691, and he d. 8 Feb 1706, call "the aged." In the will of their gr.f. Fisher, of wh. Battle was an overseer, most of the ch. are ment. Mary m. 20 Mar. 1677, John Bryant; and Sarah m. 23 Oct. 1679, Silas Titus. Very improb. seems to me the recent tradit. that he came to N.E. from France; and Cothren enlarges the extrav. of it by transfer of the circumst. imagine. to his s. John. In the will of John Luson, a neighb. of Battelle, John and Mary B. were kind. rememb. but he gave the larger part of his prop. (having no near relative this side of Eng.) to their f. spelt by the testator, Battely."Genealogical Dictionary of New England," by James Savage, 1860, pages 140-141,(Milwaukee Pub. Notes for Hannah Holbrook:
It seems unclear just when Hannah Holbrook was born, and which wife of Thomas was her mother. It seems likely that her mother was Hannah Shephard, and she was bornabt 1857 (although it has been given as 1654). This would make her about 21 years old when she married John Battell.
