10 April 1809 Abraham BELYEU sold 460 acres on the Flat Fork of Brown's creek adjacent Ralph VICKERS, BOGGAN, Daniel GOULD, John BRILEY, Malachi GOULD, Elisha KINDRED, Stephen PARKER to JOHN BENTLEY for $50.The land was part of a tract granted to Shadrach DENSON in 1775, a tract granted to Patrick BOGGAN, Jr in 1788, a tract granted to Ralph VICKERS in 1785, and three tracts granted to Abraham BELYEU in 1799, 1808, and 1807.Witnesses: William KIRBY, John THREADGILL.Signed A. Will of James Bently
In the name of God.Amen.I , James BENTLY of said District and State being weak in body but of sound mind and memory do make and ordain this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form following.
Imprimis.I give and devise unto my wife Sally BENTLY and my three youngest children, viz. Eliza BENTLY, Francis BENTLY and Alexander BENTLY, one Bay Mare and one Gray Mare and five head of Cattle and all my stock of Hogs and all my corn and all my provisions of every discription and all my household and kitchen furniture, tools, and plantation tools and one Cart.
Item.I give my wife Sally BENTLY a certain land warrant of one hundred and sixty acres of land subject to private entry at any of the Land Offices of the United States No. 60023- bearing date June the 4th. 1849.
I do hereby appoint my wife Sally BENTLY Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament making void all other wills by me made in Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this first day of January in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and fifty three and in the Seventy Seventh year of the Independence of the United States of America.

Note:Who were the other children of James Bentley and Sally Dyess?Only the "three youngest" children are mentioned in the will.Apparently the older children had already been given their inheritence before James wrote his will.

BENTLY, James of Burke County, Georgia: He was living July 14, 1792, in Burke County, Georgia, when he made affidavit respecting a deed that he had made in 1786 to Mary MONTGOMERY (see Bentley) in Barnwell Dist., South Carolina, while living there. He referred to his sister, Martha BENTLEY, as having been one of the witnesses, and to John Right (Wright) as the other witness, and saysthat Wright was then (1792) living in Georgia.Affidavit in connection with proving a lost and unrecorded deed.In 1786, the Bentley's were living in Barnwell District, South Carolina, as shown by deed recorded there in deed book 3, pp. 105-106.

Barnwell County was settled in the early 1700's by pioneers wishing to adventure into the "back country". By the 1740's, Palatine settlers entered the picture spreading throughout Orangeburg District. By the end of the Revolutionary War, many settlers obtained grants in Barnwell County. Most were from North Carolina and Virginia. Barnwell was actually a district within Orangeburg until the late 1780's
