without reference to the daughter's maiden names, it is impossible to place them as Rochester children, or Thacker children. Why is the obit listed under CLARK? (gkvi)
This Elsie Clark is the daughter of Chester Arthur Clark. She is Susan Ray's grandmother.According to Susan, it appears that Elsie and James Monroe Thacker never married.Susan is not sure that Elsie and James Rochester ever even got a divorce. It also is apparent from what Susan says, that the relationship with James Monroe Thacker was not a good one either (no surprise, as the Thacker men were not great husbands).James Monroe Thacker later married another woman, and that would have been when Elsie Clark was still alive. So, it seems that Elsie left him after bearing several children, and just took back the name of Clark. Then, it appears that the children went by the name of Clark.Funny thing about the whole thing is that Susan is very fond of her "papa Monroe", as he was called in the family.
To confirm that all of the children went by the Clark name, I will write and ask Susan. She has told me many times that Elsie's relationships were strange or strained, whichever word suits best.I do know that Susan's aunt Phyllis Smith uses the name of Phyllis Clark Smith.
To answer your question all of my G-ma's children were not Thackers. The only ones who were not were my Uncle Johnny and my Aunt Phylis. Their father was Pat Snodgrass he was a very well known preacher in Wise Co ( odd huh).
My mom had the name Thacker and so did her three sisters. One child of my g-ma and Monroes died at birth his name was Milford Ray Thacker he is buried in a small cemetery in Josephine. My mom's sisters were named Madylon,Lillie Mae and Shirley they all were Thackers. My g-ma had two other children after Monroe they had the name Clark. only because there father was a married man and she thought it would be easier that way.No more obits have surfaced if they do I will send you a copy. My Aunt I was helping out with passed away a few months ago. Susan
