FEDERALSBURG - Virgil James Wheatley, 79, passed away Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, Del. Born in Federalsburg on Jan. 2, 1923, he was the son of Hobart Z. and Agnes White Wheatley. After graduating from Federalsburg High School in 1941, he worked for Service Trucking Co. in Federalsburg, followed by time at Sunship Yard in Chester, Pa. He later became an employee of the Seaford DuPont Co., where he worked for 37 years before retiring for medical reasons. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 11, 1943. After a short training period, he was assigned to the First Battalion 182ndnfantry, Americal Division. All of his Army service time was spent in the South Pacific Islands. His division was waiting in Tokyo Bay for orders to invade Japan when the Japanese surrender of World War II was signed on the deck of the Battleship Missouri. His discharge took place Dec. 13, 1945. He was a member of VFW Post 5246. He was also a member of Nanticoke Lodge 172 AF and AM, where he recently received his 50-year pin. He was a retired member of the Federalsburg Volunteer Fire Company.He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Hazel Bradley Wheatley; one daughter, Susan R. Hammond and her husband, Donald; one grandson, Cody Caleb Hammond; one sister, Mary Ruth Wheatley Bennett and her husband, Thomas, from Douglas, Ariz.; one brother, Hobart Wheatley of Federalsburg; one aunt, Margaret M. White of Federalsburg; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Wheatley Meredith, and two brothers, Melvin Wheatley and Norris Wheatley.Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. today at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A., in Federalsburg. The Rev. Dan Walker, assisted by the Rev. Glen Lyburn, will officiate.
